The main industries in Ohio are manufacturing, agriculture, trade and services. The state's factories lead the nation in the production of plastics and rubber, fabricated metals, and electrical equipment and appliances. Ohio also is a leading producer of steel, autos, and
Ohio's export shipments of merchandise in 2006 totaled $37.8 billion. It was the 8th largest exporting state.
MANUFACTURING
Ohio’s manufacturing facilities lead the nation in the production of plastics and rubber, fabricated metals, and electrical equipment and appliances.
Ohio also is a leading producer of transportation equipment, including steel, automobiles and trucks. Ohio produces $4.6 billion of steel and steel products a year. Major companies steel companies, such as AK Steel, Timken and Worthington Industries all have their world headquarters in Ohio.
Ohio's leading manufactured export category in 2006 was transportation equipment, which accounted for $13.0 billion, or 34 percent of Ohio's total export shipments. Other top manufactured export categories that year were machinery manufactures ($5.3 billion), chemical manufactures ($4.7 billion), computers and electronic products ($2.6 billion), and fabricated metal products ($2.3 billion).
Aerospace
Ohio, incidentally, one of the birthplaces of aviation, leads the way for the advancement of new aerospace technologies in a wide variety of aviation applications: space, near space, lighter-than-air, hypersonics, propulsion, sensors, instrumentation, communications, advanced materials, human effectiveness and others.
Ohio has two federal laboratories, ten leading universities with dedicated doctoral level research and education programs in aerospace related disciplines and a large number of aerospace manufacturing companies.
Statewide, over 66,000 Ohioans are employed in the A&D economy including over 600 private companies. Ohio's aerospace jobs rank 1st among the 12 comparable states in private sector aerospace and defense manufacturing value-added, nearly double the national average. Ohio is leading the country in fields such as propulsion & power, and advanced materials and materials processing.
Motor Vehicles
Ohio is the top automotive supplier in the U.S. and second only to Michigan for motor vehicle production. The automobile industry employs more than 120,000 people in the state.
Ohio's network of auto suppliers represents all facets of motor vehicle production, including plastics, metals, instrument control and lighting. Beyond the leading motor vehicle manufacturers located in the state – General Motors, Honda, Ford, Delphi and DaimlerChrysler – Ohio boasts an impressive network of supportive companies that in conjunction produce 15 percent of the state's total economic output.
Machinery
Ohio ranks fourth in the nation in machinery production; as judged by the dollar value-added at industry establishments, Ohio is one of the nation's leaders in the production of general purpose machinery, and in metalworking machinery.
Iron & Steel
Typically 14 to 17 percent of the raw steel produced each year in America originates in mills in Ohio; the state has ranked second only to Indiana. The iron, steel and ferroalloys group was the largest iron and steel industry group in Ohio.

Ohio ranks first among the 50 states in plastics and rubber products employment. Ohio ranks first in plastics and rubber gross domestic product.

In percentage terms, Ohio's fastest-growing manufactured export category is petroleum and coal products, which rose 324 percent, from $70 million in 2002 to $296 million in 2006. Other rapidly growing manufactured exports during this period were primary metal manufactures (up 125 percent), and leather and related products (up 96 percent).
AGRICULTURE/FOOD
The reason most commonly cited for Ohio's leading position in the Food Processing industry is the state's strategic location between the grain belt and the populous Eastern markets.

The state is one of the top state for food processing- Frozen Specialty Foods 1st, Pet Food 2nd, Ketchup, Dressings 2nd, Cookie & Cracker 4th, Soft Drinks 4th. General Mills operates the world's largest pizza plant in the southern Ohio. Campbell's soup factory is the largest in the world. Heinz’ plant makes more ketchup than anywhere else in the world. Dannon operates the world's largest yogurt plant in Auglaize County. MINERALS
Among national leaders in the production of lime, clays, and salt,
TRANSPORTATION/LOGISICS
Lake Erie ports, chiefly Toledo and Cleveland, handle iron and copper ore, coal, oil, and finished materials (including steel and automobile parts).
WHOLESALE/RETAIL
Many of the large wholesale and retail companies are headquartered in Ohio. These companies include Cardinal Health, Kroger, Federated Department Stores, Limited Brands, Applied Ind. Technologies.
LIFE SCIENCES
With more than $1 billion in funding and 818 bioscience entities in operation throughout the state, Ohio is establishing an international leadership role in the cutting-edge bioscience industry.
Ohio’s strength in the biological sciences has led to a concentration in the fields of cancer and cardiovascular research and treatment, genomics, genetics, and neurology.
