Major industries in Kansas are agriculture, manufacturing, and energy production.
AGRICULTURE/FOOD
Kansas is an important agricultural state, ranking 7th among the states for total agricultural production. The nation's top wheat grower, Kansas is also a leading producer of grain sorghum and corn. Kansas generates about 15% of the nation's total wheat crop. Hay, soybeans, and sunflowers are also major crops. Cattle and calves, however, constitute the single most valuable agricultural item. Meatpacking and dairy industries are major economic activities. Meat industry was 4th largest export industry in the state in 2006. Raw Hide & Skins was 6th largest export industry in the state in 2006. Food Industry Residues was 7th largest export industry in the state in 2006. Cereals was 8th largest export industry in the state in 2006. Kansas City stockyards are among the nation's largest.
MANUFACTURING
In 2006 Aircraft and Industrial Machinery - accounted for nearly 47 percent of the state’s exports. Wichita is a center of the aerospace industry. World leaders such as Boeing, Spirit Aero Systems, Cessna Aircraft, Raytheon, and Bombardier Aerospace Learjet have major facilities there. Aircraft, Spacecraft & Parts was the largest export industry in the state in 2006. Industrial Machinery was 2nd largest export industry in the state in 2006. Vehicles was 3rd largest export industry in the state in 2006. Electric Machinery was 5th largest export industry in the state in 2006. Organic Chemicals was 9th largest export industry in the state in 2006. Optic & Medical Equipment was 10th largest export industry in the state in 2006
ENERGY
The state is a major producer of crude petroleum and coal products. Kansas also has large reserves of natural gas and helium. Kansas was once part of a great shallow sea and has commercially valuable salt deposits.
Kansas Biosciences
- More than 20,000 jobs in Kansas are associated with the state’s bioscience companies and research universities.
- Kansas is home to more than 160 bioscience companies employing 11,000 to 13,000 people.
- Kansas ’ universities employ more than 8,500 bioscience researchers and related staff.
- On February 9, 2004, the Stowers Institute committed to building its Phase II campus of 1 million square feet that will employ more than 900 people in the Kansas City region.
