Abstract
The Department of Legal Metrology, Weights & Measures in Israel, is the national authority which regulates the use of weights and measures instruments and equipment in Israel.
The department implements the law which requires that all the instruments and equipment for weights and measures which is used for commercial purposes is adequately verified in order to assure fair trade.
To achieve this goal, the Department of Legal Metrology inspects legal metrology instruments and equipment of manufacturers importers, verifies conformity to the applicable metrological standards and regulations and carries out the necessary tests and inspections.
The department employs qualified engineers and scientists who are specifically trained in this special field of metrology and is equipped with up to date equipment to exercise its duties.
The department's scope of activities, objectives and tasks includes the following:
o Establishing the necessary legislation and standards for legal metrology in Israel.
o Harmonizing Israel's standards with OIML recommendations.
o Harmonizing the Israeli legal metrology legislation with the legislation with the western countries.
o Continuously improving all the services of legal metrology in Israel.
o Developing new services parallel to the progress and development of new technologies and to the globalization in trade and industry.
o Representing Israel in the OIML and international activities on issues concerning Legal Metrology.
